This sterling silver pendant contains an authentic coin dating back to the 3rd century BC, originating from Himera, an ancient city on the northern coast of Sicily. The coin features on the obverse side the head of Medusa, the mortal Gorgon of Greek mythology, and on the reverse side, two pellets, which indicate the coin’s value.

Medusa, central to this coin’s design, is one of the three Gorgon sisters—Medusa (the foremost Gorgon), Stheno (the strong), and Euryale (the wide-ranging). Unlike her immortal sisters, Medusa was mortal and is famously known for her hair of living snakes and a gaze capable of turning onlookers to stone. On this coin, her visage is rendered in exquisite detail: the entwined serpents of her hair coil around her head, her eyes carry a penetrating intensity, and her features balance beauty with an underlying sense of menace. Historically, her image was believed to offer protection and to ward off evil, making her a potent symbol when minted on coinage.

Our jewelry store, Serra Roma, proudly presents an exquisite collection that beautifully honors the ancient traditions of Greek and Roman civilizations. Each piece in our collection, including authentic ancient Roman and Greek coins and intaglios, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, providing proof of its historical significance and origin.
