This sterling silver ring showcases a fragment of Roman marble known as red porphyry. Egyptian red porphyry became widely used in Rome during the first and second centuries AD, establishing itself as one of the most prestigious materials in imperial architecture. Nero used it in his lavish residences: porphyry columns adorned the dining room of the Domus Transitoria, while elaborate marble inlay floors incorporated it in the Domus Aurea. In the second century, under Hadrian, porphyry also featured in the decorative paving of the Pantheon.

Quarried at Mons Porphyrites in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, it was brought to Rome at the emperors’ command through a complex system of extraction and transport. Its purple colour made it a symbol of imperial dignity. These quarries, no longer active today, were worked by the Romans from the reign of Tiberius until the early fifth century AD.
