This sterling silver pendant features an authentic Roman coin dating back to the 2nd century BC. The coin showcases the bust of the Goddess Roma surrounded by a laurel wreath, while the reverse side depicts Mars and Nerio in a quadriga. Nero, a goddess associated with happy marriages and of Sabine origin, is also depicted.
In ancient Roman religion, Roma personified the city of Rome and the broader Roman state. Her image can be found on the base of the column of Antoninus Pius. Roma embodied Rome in various forms of media, including coins, sculptures, and architectural designs, serving as the symbol of the ideal woman in society. Roman political and religious concepts were often conveyed through representations of Roma.
While influenced by other contemporary goddesses like Tyches and Minerva, Roma remained distinctive as a symbol of Rome. Typically, she was depicted wearing a military helmet and other military equipment in Roman art and coinage. This portrayal highlighted the martial aspect of the city, emphasizing its strength and military prowess.
