These handmade earrings are meticulously crafted by our skilled goldsmiths using ancient Red "Porphyry" Roman marble and green "Serpentino" from Greece. These marble fragments once adorned the floors and walls of imperial villas, adding to their grandeur and elegance. Characterized by irregular light green and yellow spots, Serpentino was quarried along the Sparta road and prized for its unique beauty.
In Rome, Serpentino was used as early as the Augustan age and later became imperial property under the last of the Flavian emperors. Highly valued and admired, this exquisite marble symbolized luxury and prestige, cherished by the elite for its rarity and distinguished appearance. Today, these historic fragments are repurposed into timeless jewelry, preserving their rich heritage in an elegant and wearable form.
Imperial Red Porphyry, a rare and prized stone, was discovered in Egypt in 18 CE by Roman legionnaire Caius Cominius Leugas. Sourced exclusively from Mons Porpyritis, it traveled via The Porphyry Road to the Nile for shipment to Rome. Valued for carvings, statues, and inlaid panels in structures like the Pantheon, its use was reserved for emperors as a symbol of power. By the late third century, dwindling supply and soaring costs led to the quarries' depletion.
