These 18 Kt gold cufflinks feature two genuine Roman silver denarii from the 2nd century AD, depicting Emperor Antoninus Pius and his wife, Faustina the Elder. Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Pius (19 September 86 – 7 March 161) was the Roman emperor from 138 to 161 and one of the esteemed Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Born into a senatorial family, Antoninus held various offices under Emperor Hadrian, marrying Hadrian's niece, Faustina. Before Hadrian's death, Antoninus was adopted as his son and successor.

Upon his ascension, Antoninus earned the cognomen "Pius," either to ensure Hadrian's deification by the Senate or to save senators whom Hadrian had condemned in his later years. His reign was marked by peace, with no significant revolts or military invasions, and he governed without ever leaving Italy. Early in his reign, a successful campaign in southern Scotland led to the construction of the Antonine Wall.

Antoninus was a capable administrator, leaving a substantial treasury surplus, expanding access to drinking water, promoting legal uniformity, and aiding in the enfranchisement of freed slaves. He passed away in 161, succeeded by his adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, who ruled as co-emperors.
