This exquisite 18Kt gold pendant houses a 24Kt gold Byzantine coin (Tremissis) from the 6th century AD. On the obverse, it features the diademed bust of Emperor Justin I, while on the reverse, Victory is depicted advancing, holding a crown and a globus cruciger.

In the heart of Byzantium, Justin I ascended the throne in 518 AD, initiating a period of consolidation and stability after years of political turmoil. His reign laid the groundwork for the later achievements of Justinian I, reinforcing imperial authority and strengthening the administrative structures of the Byzantine Empire.

The depiction of Victory advancing with crown and globus cruciger symbolizes the emperor’s military and divine authority, emphasizing the connection between the ruler, the empire, and divine sanction. These coins were not only monetary instruments but also powerful tools of imperial propaganda, conveying the legitimacy and triumph of the Byzantine emperor throughout the empire.
