This sterling silver pendant showcases an authentic Roman silver denarius from the reign of Hadrian (2nd century AD).
On the front (obverse) of the coin, the river god Nile is depicted, a powerful symbol of abundance, fertility, and the prosperity brought by Egypt to the Roman Empire. The Nile was often personified as a reclining male figure, representing the life-giving waters that sustained one of Rome’s most vital provinces.
On the rear (reverse), Emperor Hadrian appears in profile, portrayed with the refined features and distinctive beard that became characteristic of his image. His portrait reflects the authority, cultural sophistication, and intellectual spirit for which he was known.
Hadrian is remembered for his extensive travels throughout the empire, his ambitious building projects, and his efforts to strengthen and unify Rome’s vast territories. A highly educated ruler with a deep appreciation for art and architecture, he even composed poetry. Among the architectural achievements of his reign are the Temple of Rome and Venus and the rebuilding of the Pantheon.
One of his most celebrated legacies is the Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s Villa), located just outside Rome. Spanning nearly seven square miles, this extraordinary complex resembled a garden city more than a traditional villa. It featured baths, libraries, sculpture gardens, theaters, open-air dining spaces, pavilions, and private residential quarters. Parts of this magnificent estate remain today, and it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
Hadrian’s tomb, known today as the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, later served as a burial place for subsequent emperors and was converted into a fortress during the 5th century, further cementing his enduring legacy in the heart of the Eternal City.
