This 18kt gold ring features an authentic Roman yellow jasper intaglio, dating back to the 1st–2nd century AD.
The jasper is intricately engraved with the image of a lion standing beneath the inscription "MAR-COS"—a name derived from Marcus, meaning “dedicated to Mars,” the Roman god of war.
In ancient Roman culture, Mars was more than a deity of battle—he was the father of Romulus and Remus, and thus seen as the divine progenitor of the Roman people. The lion, long associated with Mars, symbolized qualities such as strength, courage, protection, justice, and sovereignty—mirroring the god’s attributes.
Lions held a significant place in Roman iconography and myth. They were not only powerful creatures admired for their ferocity and dominance but also served as symbols of imperial might. Often featured in art, coins, and spectacles in the arena, lions became enduring emblems of Rome’s military prowess and enduring spirit.
