Jupiter, a deity often associated with the heavens, is believed to have originated as an aerial god. His prominent attributes include the mighty thunderbolt and the revered eagle, which held significant importance in divination and became a prevalent symbol of the Roman army. These two emblems were frequently combined, portraying Jupiter in the form of an eagle clutching a thunderbolt, a motif commonly found on Greek and Roman coins.

As the god of the sky, Jupiter served as a divine witness to oaths, exemplifying the sacred trust upon which justice and good governance relied. Many of his sacred duties and functions were centered around the Capitoline Hill, where the citadel stood. Within the Capitoline Triad, he held a central role as the guardian of the state alongside Juno and Minerva. The oak tree held special significance as his sacred tree.
