This sterling silver pendant showcases a genuine Roman coin from the 2nd century AD, featuring Emperor Marcus Aurelius on one side. On the reverse, you'll find the image of Fortuna seated on a throne, holding a rudder and a cornucopia.

Marcus Annius Verus, born in Rome in AD 121 to Annius Verus and Domitia Lucilla, was recognized for his exceptional qualities by Emperor Hadrian. He was originally betrothed to Aelius Caesar's daughter, and after Aelius's passing, he was adopted by Antoninus and took the name M. Aelius Aurelius Verus. In AD 139, he was granted the title of Caesar, and in 145, he married Faustina Junior, the daughter of Antoninus.

In 147, he received the tribunician power, and his smooth ascension to the throne occurred on March 7th, AD 161. Marcus Aurelius promptly appointed L. Verus as his co-ruler and betrothed him to his daughter, Lucilla. Marcus Aurelius is best remembered for his dedication to Stoic philosophy. He passed away on March 17th, AD 180, and was immediately deified.

Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune and luck, is often depicted with symbols like a ship's rudder, a wheel of fortune, and a cornucopia. She symbolizes life's unpredictability, capable of bestowing both good and bad luck. In some depictions, she is veiled and blind, similar to modern representations of Lady Justice, although she doesn't hold a balance. Fortuna is also associated with fate, known as Atrox Fortuna, who claimed the lives of young heirs like Gaius and Lucius, the grandsons of Emperor Augustus.

Fortuna's presence extends to various aspects of daily life and personal contexts. During the early Roman Empire, she was even linked to the Egyptian goddess Isis as Isis-Fortuna. Additionally, she shares a functional relationship with the god Bonus Eventus, often depicted alongside her on amulets, coins, and engraved gems throughout the Roman world.
