This exquisite 18 Kt gold ring features a stunning Roman carnelian intaglio dating back to the 2nd century AD, depicting the goddess Fortuna with rudder and cornucopia. Fortuna was originally an Italic fertility goddess, believed to have been worshipped since the reign of the legendary Ancus Marcius, and her cult was formally introduced by Servius Tullius. She had a temple in the Forum Boarium and a sanctuary on the Quirinal. The goddess's name appears to derive from the Etruscan deity Voltumna, meaning 'she who revolves the year'.

As Fortuna, she personifies not only good luck or fortune but also the balance between prosperity and misfortune. In this way, she represents the dual nature of fate, both as a force for good and as a capricious force that can bring about unpredictable events. Fortuna is also identified with Tyche, the Greek goddess of chance.

Fortuna's attributes include a rudder, emblematic of fortuitous guidance, and a cornucopia, or horn of plenty, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. She is often depicted wearing a modius, a headdress that is typical of her representation in Roman art. In addition to being associated with good luck and fortune, Fortuna was also associated with fertility, as indicated by her original role as a fertility goddess.

This stunning ring captures the essence of Fortuna, one of the most important and complex deities in the Roman pantheon. It is a testament to the skill and artistry of ancient Roman craftsmen and a beautiful example of the enduring legacy of Roman art and culture.
