Set into this sterling silver pendant is an authentic bronze coin from Magna Graecia, dating to the 2nd century BC, depicting the Dioscuri, the twin horsemen Castor and Pollux, riding in unison. On the reverse of the coin stands Asclepius, god of healing and medicine, holding his serpent-entwined staff.

The Dioscuri, revered throughout the Greek world and especially in the colonies of Magna Graecia, were celebrated as divine saviors—protectors of sailors, patrons of travelers, and symbols of fraternal unity. Sons of Zeus and Leda, they straddled the mortal and divine realms: Castor, born of man, and Pollux, immortal. Their appearance together on horseback evokes heroism, divine intervention, and cosmic harmony. Their constellation, Gemini, further enshrined their status in the heavens.

In Magna Graecia, where Greek culture flourished on Italic soil, their imagery resonated deeply with local values of honor, courage, and fidelity.

On the reverse, Asclepius—the compassionate healer—stands with his staff, around which coils the sacred serpent, symbolizing regeneration and the mysteries of life and death. Son of Apollo and trained by the wise centaur Chiron, Asclepius became the embodiment of medical knowledge and divine care. His sanctuaries, the Asclepieia, were ancient centers of healing, where the sick would seek dreams and divine prescriptions.
