Ancient Roman coins silver cufflinks depicting Emperor Hadrian and his wife Sabina
These sterling silver cufflinks were designed by me and handcrafted by the artisans at my shop, SERRA. Established in 1910, SERRA is located at Via Margutta 57 in the historic heart of Rome, just a stone's throw from the Spanish Steps! Each cufflink features an authentic Roman coin depicting Emperor Hadrian and his wife, Sabina.
Emperor Hadrian is renowned for his extensive travels, architectural projects, and efforts to unify the Roman Empire's far-flung territories. A cultured and educated leader, he left behind several poems and numerous architectural achievements. Notable among these are the Temple of Rome and Venus and the Pantheon, which he rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire during his predecessor's reign. His country estate, Villa Adriana, located outside Rome, exemplifies the luxury and elegance of the Roman world. Spanning seven square miles, it was more a garden city than a villa, featuring baths, libraries, sculpture gardens, theaters, alfresco dining halls, pavilions, and private suites, some of which still exist today. Villa Adriana was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Hadrian's tomb, now known as the Castel Sant'Angelo, served as a mausoleum for subsequent emperors and was converted into a fortress in the 5th century.
Vibia Sabina (83–136/137) was a Roman Empress and Hadrian's wife, as well as his second cousin once removed. She was the daughter of Matidia (the niece of Emperor Trajan) and suffect consul Lucius Vibius Sabinus. Following her father's death in 84, Sabina and her half-sister Matidia Minor were raised by their maternal grandmother, Marciana. At the request of Empress Plotina, Sabina married Hadrian in 100. Hadrian succeeded her great-uncle in 117. Sabina's mother, Matidia, who was also fond of Hadrian, supported their marriage. Sabina received more public honors in Rome and its provinces than any other imperial woman since Augustus' wife, Livia. She is notably the first woman to be featured on a regular and continuous series of coins minted in Rome. Sabina was the most traveled and visible empress of her time, and in 128, she was awarded the title of Augusta.
