Genuine Roman Silver Coin Pendant depicting a Dolphin twined around Anchor

This silver pendant was designed by me and handmade by the craftsmen of my shop, SERRA, opened in Rome in 1910 and located in via Margutta 57, in the historic center of the city, very close to the Spanish Steps! The pendant has an original roman silver denarius ( 1st century A.D.) depicting a dolphin. To the ancient Greek and Roman sailors, dolphins were a symbol of divine protection and guidance because they aided the sailors by surfing the bow wave of ships at sea. They were seen to be messengers for the gods and were therefore associated with the Nereids, Poseidon's daughters, the heroine Galatea, the goddess of love Aphrodite and the music-loving sun god (Apollo). The representation of this fish offers itself on ancient coins in more than one fashion; sometimes in a quiet and fixed position, at others in a state of movement. The Dolphin was also sacred to Neptune, the deity who presided over the sea and affairs of navigation; hence we find the dolphin in the hand of that god, on coins of Agrippa, Augustus, Caligula, Vespasian, Hadrian, Domitian and other Roman Emperors. On the reverse side of the coin we can see Emperor Domitian. All of our jewels are certified by a certificate of authenticity attesting their Greek or Roman origin!
