ANTONINUS PIUS Genuine Ancient Roman Silver Coin 2nd cent. AD Pendant
This pendant showcases an original Roman coin from the 2nd century AD featuring the likeness of Emperor Antoninus Pius on one side and Italy on the reverse. Antoninus, born into a senatorial family, held various positions during Emperor Hadrian's rule. Hadrian, who adopted Antoninus as his son and heir shortly before his passing, bestowed the name "Pius" upon him upon ascending the throne. This moniker may have been earned for compelling the Senate to deify his adoptive father or for saving senators condemned to death during Hadrian's later years.
Antoninus Pius' reign stands out for the remarkable tranquility of the Roman Empire during his rule. There were no major uprisings or foreign invasions during this period, and he governed primarily from Italy without venturing abroad. An early military campaign in southern Scotland led to the construction of the Antonine Wall.
Antoninus was a proficient administrator, leaving a substantial surplus in the treasury for his successors. He also extended access to clean drinking water across the Empire, promoted adherence to the law, and facilitated the liberation of slaves. His reign concluded due to illness in 161, and he was succeeded by his adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, who shared the role of co-emperors.
