This sterling silver pendant features a bronze coin from the 3rd century AD, portraying a panther beneath the inscription "Libero" ("free"). In ancient Roman religion and mythology, Liber, also known as Liber Pater, embodied aspects of viticulture, wine, fertility, and freedom. Revered by Rome's plebeians, he was part of the Aventine Triad. His festival, Liberalia, celebrated on March 17, became synonymous with free speech and the rites of adulthood.

Liber's attributes gradually merged with those of the Greek god Dionysus/Bacchus, sharing myths and symbols. Dionysus, often depicted in Graeco-Roman culture as a heroic savior and world-traveler, famously conquered India and returned in a triumphant procession with tigers, satyrs, and maenads. Similarly, Liber adopted the iconography and tales of Bacchus, becoming associated with his imagery and stories.

Pliny credited Liber with inventing commerce, the diadem, and the triumphal procession, elements depicted in Roman mosaics and sarcophagi. References in Roman and Greek literature describe triumphs featuring "Bacchic" processional elements, echoing the legendary "Triumph of Liber."
