This sterling silver pendant, featuring an authentic Roman coin from the 1st century AD, was intricately designed by myself and expertly handcrafted by the artisans of my esteemed establishment, SERRA. Established in Rome in 1910, our shop stands proudly at Via Margutta 57, nestled in the historic heart of the city, mere steps away from the iconic Spanish Steps.

Vespasian, born on 17 November AD 9 and passing on 24 June 79, ascended to the Roman throne from 69 to 79 AD. Emerging as the fourth and final emperor in the tumultuous Year of the Four Emperors, he established the Flavian dynasty, which would govern the Empire for the ensuing 27 years. Notably, Vespasian hailed from an equestrian background, ascending to the senatorial rank later in life, a distinction that set him apart from his predecessors.

Vespasian's military prowess solidified his reputation, with notable achievements including his leadership role as legate of Legio II Augusta during the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD. The opportunity for his imperial ascent arose during the Jewish rebellion when Emperor Nero's demise plunged Rome into chaos. Amidst the ensuing civil strife, Vespasian garnered support from the Roman legions of Egypt and Judaea, who declared him emperor on 1 July 69 AD.

In collaboration with influential figures such as Mucianus, the governor of Syria, and Primus, a general in Pannonia, Vespasian orchestrated a strategic bid for power. While his son Titus commanded forces besieging Jerusalem, Vespasian's allies engaged in decisive confrontations against Vitellius, ultimately securing victory on 20 December 69 AD. Subsequently, Vespasian was formally declared emperor by the Senate, marking the dawn of a new era under the Flavian dynasty. Through this pendant, we honor the legacy of Vespasian and his pivotal role in shaping the course of Roman history.
