This ring, dating back to the 4th century B.C., features an authentic silver coin portraying Helios. On the reverse side of the coin, there is a depiction of a rose. Helios, often equated with Apollo, was revered as the patron deity of Rhodes since the city's establishment in 407 BC. Over the subsequent four centuries, Helios became the predominant motif on Rhodian coinage. The inclusion of the rose served as a clever wordplay on the city's name, "Rhodon," in Greek—a common practice in ancient Greek coinage.
Renowned for erecting the colossal statue of Helios, known as the Colossus of Rhodes, the Rhodians immortalized their deity in monumental form. However, the Colossus met its demise in a catastrophic earthquake in 226 BC, remaining in ruins for over 800 years according to Strabo (14.2.5), until it was eventually dismantled and sold as scrap following the Arab Conquest in 654.
