This ring, meticulously crafted by our skilled goldsmiths based on an original design by Serra, showcases an authentic Roman intaglio carved on prasio, a stone from the 1st-2nd century AD. The intaglio depicts a Griffin, accompanied by two cabochon rubies. Prasio, known as a green stone in ancient times and now identified as chromochalcedony, held a revered place in Roman glyptics, often portraying emperors, mythological figures, or animals. Its origin is speculated to trace back to Cyprus, and ancient texts, like Pliny's, attributed potent magical and therapeutic properties to these "green stones," especially prasio.

The Griffin, an ancient mythical creature, typically embodies a lion's body fused with the wings and head of a bird of prey. Widely depicted in Roman art, it draws its inspiration directly from the Hellenistic era. Often serving as the guardian of Apollo's temple and altar, it also assumed a protective role in the realm of the dead since archaic times.

Greek lore positioned Griffins as custodians of vast gold reserves, where the one-eyed Arimaspen was said to have attempted a theft. Symbolizing wisdom and safeguarding the treasures and sacred knowledge of Apollo, the Griffin's significance was profound.

As the Roman Empire expanded, the Griffin seamlessly integrated into Roman mythology, associated with Jupiter, the deity governing the skies and lightning. Here, the Griffin symbolized strength and power, defending the empire and its conquests.

In Western culture, the Griffin transcended its mythic origins, evolving into a symbol of nobility, courage, and strength. Noble families and powerful institutions often adopted it as an emblem.

In essence, the Griffin's history within Greek and Roman mythos is veiled in mystery and legend. However, its enduring symbolism of protection, wisdom, and power remains resolute. The Griffin's influence has endured through centuries, captivating imaginations and retaining its fascination in contemporary times.
