The ancient Romans firmly believed that the Sun, Moon, and other celestial bodies, including the known planets (seven at the time, with Neptune and Pluto discovered later as the farthest ones), influenced human life, death, and destiny through their movements. The concept of the septem Triones (seven oxen) in astronomy refers to the seven brightest stars in the Ursa Major constellation. This belief dates back to ancient times, as Ursa Major was one of the earliest constellations identified by human curiosity. In 76 BC, the monetary magistrate of that year, L. Lucretius Trio, minted silver coins featuring a crescent moon and seven stars.

The same imagery of the moon and stars was often engraved on objects or precious gemstones for jewelry purposes. In late antiquity, the cultural and historical significance of the planets extended beyond astronomy and their association with the Olympian deities. During this period, the planets played a vital role in astrology, considered as essential influencers. They were attributed various functions in the realms of astral meteorology, geography, ethnography, and most importantly, astrology based on the Zodiac and the Planets. According to astrology, the planets exerted a decisive influence on individuals, starting from birth horoscopes.

The belief in the planets' influence expanded to include not just animate and inanimate nature but also metals, gemstones, plants, the animal kingdom, and even the alphabet. It was believed that the forces embodied by the planets had an effect on all aspects of nature, ranging from the macrocosm to the microcosm, and encompassing all facets of life.
