Vespasian, depicted on an authentic Roman coin from the 1st century AD, founded the Flavian dynasty that governed the Empire for 27 years. He hailed from an equestrian family and ascended to the senatorial rank later in life, distinguishing himself through military prowess.

His acclaim stemmed from leading Legio II Augusta during the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD. During the Jewish rebellion, while Vespasian besieged Jerusalem, Emperor Nero's suicide triggered a year of civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors. With Galba and Otho's rapid demise, the Roman legions in Egypt and Judaea proclaimed Vespasian as emperor on July 1, 69 AD.

To secure his claim, Vespasian allied with Mucianus, the governor of Syria, and Primus, a Pannonian general. Meanwhile, his son Titus commanded the forces besieging Jerusalem. Primus and Mucianus led the Flavian forces against Vitellius, while Vespasian assumed control of Egypt. On December 20, 69 AD, Vitellius was defeated, and the Senate declared Vespasian as emperor the next day.
