Emperor Augustus, originally known as Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor, reigning from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. As the founder of the Roman Principate, he marked the beginning of the Roman Empire and is regarded as one of the most influential leaders in world history.
Under Augustus’ rule, the Roman world experienced a long era of stability and prosperity known as the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta. Although frontier conflicts and internal political tensions continued, the empire enjoyed more than two centuries of relative peace and development.
Born into a wealthy equestrian family, Augustus inherited the name, estate, and loyalty of Julius Caesar’s legions. Together with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, he formed the Second Triumvirate to defeat Caesar’s assassins. Following their victory, the triumvirs divided control of the Roman Republic and ruled as de facto dictators.
After the dissolution of the Second Triumvirate, Augustus formally restored the institutions of the Republic while retaining supreme authority through control of the military, key magistracies, and the most important powers of the state.
