This sterling silver pendant features an authentic Roman coin from the 2nd century BC, depicting the Capitoline she-wolf with the twins Romulus and Remus, as well as the helmeted head of the Goddess Roma on the reverse side. In Roman mythology, wolves held a special significance as they played a crucial role in the story of Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome. According to the legend, the twins were rescued by a she-wolf after being thrown into the Tiber River on the orders of King Amulius of Alba Longa. The wolf suckled them, and they were later discovered and adopted by a shepherd and his wife.
The symbolism of the she-wolf in Roman culture represented Roman power and is depicted in various pieces of Roman art and coinage. The earliest known statue of the she-wolf suckling the twins was erected in 296 BC, and dedications to the she-wolf, such as the Lupa Augusta, were set up in various Roman provinces. These dedications were often made by priests of the imperial cult, further cementing the connection between the she-wolf and the Roman state.
Our brand's exquisite jewelry collection pays homage to these ancient traditions, and every piece comes with a certificate of authenticity, attesting to its Greek or Roman origin.
