These 18 Kt gold cufflinks feature two genuine Roman silver denarii from the 2nd century AD, depicting Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his wife, Faustina the Younger. Marcus Aurelius (26 April 121 – 17 March 180) was the Roman emperor from 161 to 180, and is best known as the last of the Five Good Emperors and one of history’s most famous Stoic philosophers. He married Faustina the Younger, daughter of Antoninus Pius, solidifying the ties between the two ruling families.

Upon his ascension, Marcus Aurelius co-ruled initially with his adopted brother, Lucius Verus, before taking sole control after Verus's death. His reign was marked by significant military conflicts, including the Marcomannic Wars, campaigns in the East, and a series of natural disasters and economic difficulties. Despite these challenges, Marcus Aurelius remained dedicated to philosophical pursuits, leaving behind his famous work Meditations, a cornerstone of Stoic thought.

Faustina the Younger was highly regarded for her charitable works and was honored with the title Augusta. She accompanied her husband on military campaigns and was involved in various imperial initiatives, earning the respect of the Roman people. Marcus Aurelius and Faustina the Younger’s legacy includes a reign characterized by philosophical reflection, military defense of the empire, and efforts to maintain stability during turbulent times.
