An authentic Greek bronze coin from the 1st century BC has been set in this sterling silver pendant. This rare coin was minted in the Sicilian city of Alaisa Archonidea under the authority of Caecilius Rufus, who served as duovir (one of the chief magistrates of the city).
The coin depicts a lyre on one side and the head of Apollo on the other. The lyre, a symbol of music and harmony, reflects the city’s cultural and religious devotion, while the image of Apollo underscores the enduring influence of Greek religion and art even in Roman-controlled Sicily.
Apollo, whose image graces the coin, was revered across both the Greek and Roman worlds. He is the god of the Sun, the arts, music, poetry, prophecy, medicine, and the sciences that illuminate the intellect. His primary symbols—the Sun and the lyre—signify his divine connection to light, wisdom, and harmony.
