This sterling silver pendant features an authentic Roman coin from the 1st century AD depicting the emperor Augustus. On the back of the coin, we can observe his two nephews, Lucius and Gaius, who he designated as his heirs.

Augustus, originally born as Gaius Octavius in 63 BC, was the great-nephew of Julius Caesar. After fighting alongside Julius Caesar in 47 BC, Augustus was appointed as Julius Caesar's heir in his will. At the age of 19, Augustus accepted the inheritance and became involved in the complicated world of Roman politics. Through strategic alliances, defeating political rivals, and winning a civil war, he secured his position as the first Emperor of Rome.

Despite his immense power, Augustus claimed to act for the glory of the Roman Republic and presented himself as a frugal and modest leader. He reorganized Roman life throughout the empire by passing laws to encourage marital stability and renew religious practices, instituting a system of taxation and a census, expanding the network of Roman roads, founding a postal service, and establishing a regular police force and fire brigade in Rome.

Augustus also expanded the Roman Empire by annexing Egypt, part of Spain, areas of central Europe, and even lands in the Middle East, such as Judea in 6 AD. These additions, along with the end of civil wars, fostered the growth of an enormous trading network.

To secure his legacy, Augustus adopted his sister's sons, Gaius and Lucius, as his heirs.
