This sterling silver pendant features an authentic Roman silver denarius bearing the likeness of Emperor Antoninus Pius. What sets this coin apart is its unique reverse side, which displays the bust of another emperor, Marcus Aurelius.

Antoninus Pius, originally born into a senatorial family, rose to prominence through various offices during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. Upon Hadrian's death, Antoninus was compelled to adopt Marcus Aurelius as his son and successor. However, Marcus Aurelius initially resisted this transition, feeling a reluctance towards the pursuit of power and the ostentation of palace life.

Despite these initial reservations, Marcus Aurelius eventually embraced his role, coming to view it as a solemn responsibility rather than mere vanity. Meanwhile, Antoninus Pius ascended to the throne, earning the cognomen "Pius" for his actions, whether for compelling the Senate to deify Hadrian or for his efforts in sparing senators sentenced to death by the former emperor.

Antoninus Pius's reign is distinguished by a period of peace and stability within the Empire, marked by the absence of major revolts or military incursions. Notably, he governed without venturing beyond Italy's borders and implemented several reforms aimed at improving governance and infrastructure. These included a successful military campaign in southern Scotland, resulting in the construction of the Antonine Wall, as well as initiatives to expand access to drinking water and promote legal conformity.

An effective administrator, Antoninus Pius left behind a significant surplus in the treasury and facilitated the enfranchisement of freed slaves. His reign came to an end with his death in 161, after which he was succeeded by his adopted sons Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, who would jointly rule as co-emperors.
