This sterling silver pendant holds a bronze coin from the 3rd century AD, portraying a panther beneath the inscription "Libero" ("free"). In ancient Roman religion and mythology, Liber, also known as Liber Pater, embodied aspects of viticulture, wine, fertility, and freedom. Revered by Rome's plebeians, he formed part of their Aventine Triad. His festival of Liberalia, celebrated on March 17, became synonymous with free speech and the rights associated with reaching adulthood.

Liber's domain and attributes gradually merged with those of the Greek god Dionysus/Bacchus, sharing their myths and symbolism. Dionysus, often euhemerized as a historical figure in Graeco-Roman culture, was depicted as a heroic savior, world-traveler, and the conqueror of India, returning in a triumphant procession with tigers, satyrs, and maenads. Liber, likewise, became associated with Bacchus, adopting his iconography and tales. Pliny credited Liber with inventing the practice of commerce, as well as the diadem and the triumphal procession, elements of which are depicted in Roman mosaics and sarcophagi. References in Roman and Greek literature depict triumphs featuring "Bacchic" processional elements, echoing the legendary "Triumph of Liber."
