This sterling silver pendant features an authentic Roman coin dating back to the 3rd century AD — a tetradrachm portraying an eagle grasping a laurel wreath in its beak on one side, and the bust of Emperor Philip on the reverse.
In Roman iconography, the eagle symbolized Jupiter, the supreme deity and guardian of the Roman state, embodying strength, divine authority, and military dominance. It often appeared on coinage to evoke Rome’s imperial power and the favor of the gods.
The obverse of this coin depicts Marcus Julius Philippus, known to history as Philip the Arab, who ruled as Roman Emperor from 244 to 249 AD. Born in the Roman province of Arabia Petraea, Philip rose through the military ranks and assumed the imperial title following the death of Emperor Gordian III during a campaign against Persia.
Philip is notable for his efforts to stabilize the empire and for presiding over the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Rome in 248 AD, an occasion marked by grand celebrations and widespread coin issuance.
