This exquisite gold aureus pendant features an authentic Roman coin from the 4th century AD, showcasing the likeness of Emperor Leo I on the obverse. Depicted in full armor, with a shield and lance, Leo stands as a symbol of strength and leadership. On the reverse side, the image of the goddess Victoria is portrayed holding a jeweled cross, a powerful symbol of divine favor and victory.

Leo, a native of Dacia, was a man with considerable military experience but little formal education. He was proclaimed emperor shortly after the death of Marcian in early A.D. 457. At the time of his accession, the Eastern Roman army was composed largely of Germans and other foreign soldiers. Leo's most significant achievement was overcoming the immense power of the German military faction, which had been a major threat to the security of the state.

To counter this, Leo recruited large numbers of Isaurians, who, while native subjects of the Empire, were as fierce and formidable as the German barbarians. This strategic decision helped to shift the balance of power within the army.

In 473, Leo fell seriously ill, and to ensure the stability of the empire, he elevated his infant grandson, Leo II, to the rank of Augustus, effectively addressing the question of succession. Leo passed away on February 3rd the following year, at the age of 63.
