These 18 Kt gold cufflinks feature two genuine Roman silver denarii from the 3rd century AD, depicting Emperor Elagabalus and his wife, Julia Paula. Elagabalus (c. 203 – 11 March 222) was Roman emperor from 218 to 222, ascending the throne as a teenager under the influence of his powerful grandmother, Julia Maesa. Known for his controversial reign and religious zeal, Elagabalus attempted to elevate the worship of the Syrian sun god Elagabal (from whom he took his name) above traditional Roman deities, sparking widespread unrest among Rome’s elite.
To help legitimize his rule and appease Roman sensibilities, Elagabalus married Julia Cornelia Paula in 219 AD. Paula, from a noble and respected Roman family, was given the title of Augusta upon their union.
Julia Paula's brief time as empress was marked by dignity and restraint. However, her time in the imperial spotlight was fleeting, her coins remain a testament to her status and role during one of the most turbulent reigns in Roman imperial history.
