This exquisite 18 kt gold ring boasts a remarkable Roman intaglio on carnelian, which dates back to the 2nd century AD. The intaglio depicts an eagle and a cornucopia, a powerful and symbolic representation of both Roman mythology and Imperial cult. The eagle, known as the bird of Jupiter, was a revered symbol of strength, courage, and immortality, as well as the power of Rome, the Emperor, and the Empire. Its ability to fly above the storm made it the king of the birds, and in ancient mythology, it was believed to carry the souls of humans into the presence of the Gods.

The cornucopia, on the other hand, was associated with a variety of Greek and Roman deities, particularly those associated with harvest, prosperity, or spiritual abundance. Earth goddesses such as Gaia and Terra, as well as Plutus, the god of riches and son of the grain goddess Demeter, and the nymph Maia, were all depicted with the cornucopia. Fortuna, the goddess of luck, who had the power to grant prosperity, was also associated with the cornucopia.

In the Roman Imperial cult, abstract deities such as Abundantia, who personified abundance, and Annona, the goddess of the grain supply to the city of Rome, were also depicted with the cornucopia. This remarkable Roman intaglio on carnelian elegantly captures the allegorical and votive representation of the eagle and the cornucopia, making it a true testament to the enduring legacy of Roman mythology and Imperial cult.
