Genuine Ancient Roman coin 3rd century AD Silver Pendant depicting Eagle with a laurel branch

This sterling silver pendant features an authentic Roman coin dating back to the 3rd century AD, specifically a tetradrachm portraying an eagle grasping a laurel wreath in its beak, while the reverse showcases the bust of Emperor Elagabalus.

In ancient times, the eagle symbolized Jupiter, the paramount deity and protector of Rome and its empire, serving as an emblem of Roman power and military prowess.

In May 218 AD, the Roman Legion III Gallica, stationed in Emesa, hailed Sextius Varius Avitus Bassianus as emperor, adopting the title Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, known to history as ELAGABALO or Elagabalus. This proclamation was orchestrated by his mother, Julia Soemia, and grandmother, Julia Mesa, who claimed his lineage traced back to Caracalla. Despite resistance from Macrinus, he was ultimately overthrown, leading to his demise near Antioch.

Upon reaching Rome in 219 AD, Elagabalus entrusted governance to Julia Mesa, who co-ruled alongside her grandson and Alexander Severus, the son of her other daughter, Julia Mamea. Growing discontent with Elagabalus's rule culminated in his assassination by the Praetorian Guard.

Elagabalus introduced the symbolic stone representing the solar deity Elagabalus to Rome, where a temple dedicated to the new divinity, Deus Invictus Sol Elagabalus, was erected on the Palatine Hill. Following his death, the cult of Elagabalus was suppressed in Rome, and the sacred stone was returned to Emesa.
