Set within this sterling silver pendant is an authentic Roman bronze coin, dating back to the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus in the 3rd century AD. One side of the coin features Helios, the Sun god, depicted with a radiant head, while the other side portrays the likeness of the Emperor himself.

Helios, known as Helius in ancient Greek mythology, represents the divine embodiment of the Sun. Often depicted with a crown emitting rays and driving a chariot across the sky, Helios symbolizes not only the Sun but also serves as a guardian of oaths and the deity associated with sight. While initially a lesser figure in Classical Greek religion, Helios gained prominence during late antiquity, particularly due to his identification with other solar deities such as Apollo and Sol in Roman mythology.

During the 4th century AD, the Roman Emperor Julian elevated Helios to a central position in his brief resurgence of traditional Roman religious practices. Throughout Greek mythology, poetry, and literature, Helios features prominently as the son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, and as the brother of Selene (the Moon) and Eos (the dawn). His mythological significance transcends mere solar symbolism, portraying him as a vital figure in the celestial and divine realms.
