This 925 silver pendant showcases an authentic Roman coin (as) featuring the iconic imagery of the two-faced Janus. On the reverse side of the coin, a ship's bow facing right is depicted with the inscription "ROMA" underneath. In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus holds sway over beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. His distinctive portrayal with two faces symbolizes his ability to gaze simultaneously into the future and the past.

Traditionally associated with the month of January, Janus presides over the commencement and conclusion of conflicts, thereby governing over war and peace. The gates of a structure in Rome, often erroneously referred to as a temple but actually an open enclosure with gates at each end, bear his name and were ceremonially opened during times of war and closed to signify the onset of peace—a rarity in Roman history. As a deity of transitions, Janus oversees rites of passage, including birth and journeys, and is also revered for his role in facilitating trade and travel, particularly through his association with Portunus, a similar deity associated with harbors and gateways.
